Boost Your Home Training Environment
I get it. We live at home. We work at home… and now we’re training at home too?
When we spend all of our time in the same space it can be tricky feeling like moving. When we eat, sleep, work, and relax in a space it doesn’t always carry ‘get hyped’ vibes.
I live in a pretty dinky middle terrace, and I train in my livingroom. It’s where I’ve reached all of my biggest goals, and there are a few tips I’ve picked up along the way to make home training feel goooood!
Accept & work with the ‘at home’ pressures
We don’t get away from the ‘home’ jobs when we train at home… so if the floor needing vacuumed puts you off, vacuum as part of your prep!
Not the whole house, but the area you’re going to be training in.
Tidying this area not only makes it easier to train, but also leaves part of the house tidier after your workout too. Result!
Make a ritual of putting down and picking up your mat
When we see (and don’t use) something every day we start to ignore it. A really quick way to make sure your training space feels different to your living space, is to make a ritual of placing down and picking up your mat.
As you place your mat down, start to get your head in the workout frame, letting go of everything that has happened already in the day.
At the end of your workout roll your mat up, and tidy your equipment away, then boom! You are back in your living room, kitchen or bedroom!
Make use of your other senses
If you’re trying to get in the zone, but you can still smell last night’s dinner it can be hard to really immerse yourself in your training experience.
Play with diffusers, candles, and other scents. Change the lighting, or play with a different music playlist.
By engaging our other senses we improve the association between our training conditions, and actually doing our training.
Practice showing up
Now, this might sound ridiculous, but bear with me!
We’ve tidied, we’ve put our yoga mat down, we’ve got something smelly involved… now we’re going to move for a couple of minutes… then put it all away?
Yep.
We’re building the association between preparing our environment and training there. Once we have that strong association this is as close as we will get to motivation in a can, so it’s well worth building this up over time.

You don’t have to, you get to - treat this like essential me-time!
I know when we train at home it can feel like just another thing we ‘have’ to do… but it doesn’t need to be that way.
Instead of saying we ‘have to’, try saying you ‘get to’ train at home.
You get to roll out your mat, listen to music, and look after your body without going anywhere. Bliss.
How are you going to tweak your home training environment?
Even if we can’t have a distinct training space, we can create a distinct environment for exploring our training, moving our body, and stilling our mind.
